Where did HIV come from?

The most recent presentation on the origin of HIV was presented at the 6th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunitistic Infections (Chicago, January 1999). At that conference, research was presented that suggested that HIV had "crossed over" into the human population from a particular species of chimpanzee, probably through blood contact that occurred during hunting and field dressing of the animals. The CDC states that the findings presented at this conference provide the strongest evidence to date that HIV-1 originated in non-human primates. The research findings were featured in the February 4,1999 issue of the journal, Nature. We know that the virus has existed in the United States, Haiti and Africa since at least 1977-1978. In 1979, rare types of pneumonia, cancer and other illnesses were being reported by doctors in Los Angeles and New York. The common thread was that these conditions were not usually found in persons with healthy immune systems. In 1982 the Centers

How long does it take HIV to cause AIDS?

Currently, the average time between HIV infection and the appearance of signs that could lead to an AIDS diagnosis is 8-11 years. This time varies greatly from person to person and can depend on many factors including a person's health status and behaviors. Today there are medical treatments that can slow down the rate at which HIV weakens the immune system. There are other treatments that can prevent or cure some of the illnesses associated with AIDS. As with other diseases, early detection offers more options for treatment and preventative health care.

What is the difference between HIV & AIDS?

HIV is the virus that causes AIDS . H - Human: because this virus can only infect human beings. I - Immuno-deficiency: because the effect of the virus is to create a deficiency, a failure to work properly, within the body's immune system. V - Virus: because this organism is a virus, which means one of its characteristics is that it is incapable of reproducing by itself. It reproduces by taking over the machinery of the human cell. A - Acquired: because it's a condition one must acquire or get infected with; not something transmitted through the genes I - Immune: because it affects the body's immune system, the part of the body which usually works to fight off germs such as bacteria and viruses D - Deficiency: because it makes the immune system deficient (makes it not work properly) S - Syndrome: because someone with AIDS may experience a wide range of different diseases and opportunistic infections. How is HIV Transmitted?

HIV can be transmitted from an infected person to another through: Blood (including menstrual blood) Semen Vaginal secretions Breast milk Blood contains the highest concentration of the virus, followed by semen, followed by vaginal fluids, followed by breast milk. * Activities That Allow HIV Transmission Unprotected sexual contact Direct blood contact, including injection drug needles, blood transfusions, accidents in health care settings or certain blood products Mother to baby (before or during birth, or through breast milk) Sexual intercourse (vaginal and anal): In the genitals and the rectum, HIV may infect the mucous membranes directly or enter through cuts and sores caused during intercourse (many of which would be unnoticed). Vaginal and anal intercourse is a high-risk practice. Oral sex (mouth-penis, mouth-vagina): The mouth is an inhospitable environment for HIV (in semen, vaginal fluid or blood), meaning the risk of HIV transmission through the throat, gums, and oral

Can I get HIV from Kissing

Casual contact through closed-mouth or "social" kissing is not a risk for transmission of HIV. Because of the potential for contact with blood during "French" or open-mouth, wet kissing, CDC recommends against engaging in this activity with a person known to be infected. However, the risk of acquiring HIV during open-mouth kissing is believed to be very low. CDC has investigated only one case of HIV infection that may be attributed to contact with blood during open-mouth kissing. In this case both partners had extensive dental problems including gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). It is likely that there was blood present in both partners' mouths making direct blood to blood contact a possibility.

Can I get HIV from Oral Sex?

There is considerable debate within the HIV/AIDS prevention community regarding the risk of transmission of HIV through oral sex. What is currently known is that there is some risk associated with performing oral sex without protection; (there have been a few documented cases of HIV transmission through oral sex). While no one knows exactly what that risk is, cumulative evidence indicates that the risk is less than that of unprotected anal or vaginal sex. The risk from receiving oral sex, for both a man and a woman, is considered to be very low. Currently, risk reduction options when performing oral sex on a man (fellatio) include the use of latex condoms, but also include withdrawal before ejaculation without a condom (avoiding semen in the mouth) and/or refraining from this activity when cuts or sores are present in the mouth. When performing oral sex on a woman (cunnilingus), moisture barriers such as a dam (sheet of latex), a cut-open and flattened condom, or household plastic wr

How Can I tell if I am affected with HIV?

The only way to determine whether you are infected is to be tested for HIV infection. You can't rely on symptoms to know whether or not you are infected with HIV. Many people who are infected with HIV don't have any symptoms at all for many years. Similarly, you can't rely on symptoms to establish that a person has AIDS. The symptoms associated with AIDS are similar to the symptoms of many other diseases. AIDS is a diagnosis made by a doctor based on specific criteria established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Oppurtunistic Infections

In our bodies, we carry many germs - bacteria, protozoa, fungi, and viruses. When our immune system is working, it controls these germs. But when the immune system is weakened by HIV disease or by some medications, these germs can get out of control and cause health problems. Infections that take advantage of weakness in the immune defenses are called "opportunistic". The phrase "opportunistic infection" is often shortened to "OI". TESTING FOR OIs You can be infected with an OI, and "test positive" for it, even though you don't have the disease. For example, almost everyone with HIV tests positive for Cytomegalovirus (CMV) . But it is very rare for CMV disease to develop unless the CD4 cell count drops below 50, a sign of serious damage to the immune system. To see if you're infected with an OI, your blood might be tested for antigens (pieces of the germ that causes the OI) or for antibodies (proteins made by the immune system to fight

Wha is AIDS?

WHAT DOES "AIDS" MEAN? AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome: * Acquired means you can get infected with it; * Immune Deficiency means a weakness in the body's system that fights diseases. * Syndrome means a group of health problems that make up a disease. AIDS is caused by a virus called HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. If you get infected with HIV, your body will try to fight the infection. It will make "antibodies," special molecules to fight HIV. A blood test for HIV looks for these antibodies. If you have them in your blood, it means that you have HIV infection. People who have the HIV antibodies are called "HIV-Positive." Being HIV-positive, or having HIV disease, is not the same as having AIDS. Many people are HIV-positive but don't get sick for many years. As HIV disease continues, it slowly wears down the immune system. Viruses, parasites, fungi and bacteria that usually don't cause any problems can make you very si

Creating a Green Workplace

Computers, networking and internet have certainly changed our lives and they way we work. In the 21 st century 99% of the offices have all the above mentioned three great inventions. Every office uses computers networked to each other and also connected to the internet. Every office uses one or more servers for e-mails, hosting websites, FTPs, backups, storage the list goes on and on. No office can function without these boons of technology. Even my office has all these and it helps us function better. But these inventions are destroying our environment. So what can we do, so that our environment is not harmed from the energy that our offices consume. The office complexes use a lot of energy there by inc reasing the energy consumption, which is directly proportional to the burning of fossil fuels (coal). So does that mean, our earth has to die in the hands of technology? Certainly not. The wise usage of electricity in offices can certainly reduce the green house e

NASA Scientist James Hansen Want Action On Global Warming

Hansen is director of the Goddard Institute of Space Studies at NASA . Hansen is on of first scientists that warm people about global warming in the 1980. He said if web (human) still produce CO2 will make disaster to our world. By using coal and other fossil fuel , this will increase CO2 concentration on our atmosphere from 385 to 600 parts per million (ppm) in the next 10 year. Major scientists will say that cause of global warming is because human produce CO2, but not for Roy W. Spencer, a research scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. But Spencer views are not shared by most science, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change , a multinational panel that released updated conclusions about human produced global warming and its risks last year. How To Reduce CO2 Emissions Hansen has some idea and solution for this : 1. Postpone building new coal fired power plant unless they have carbon sequestration technology. 2. Phasing out the use of coal fire

How To Stop Global Warming From Home

Global Warmin is becoming serious problem right. Uncertain weather and storm become disaster everywhere. To reduce global warming we can’t government to act. Government to busy with politic rather than think how to reduce global warming. Demonstartion will change anything, but we can to start stop global warming from our home. 1. Change your bulb to fluorescent light bulb (cfl). CFL bulb like Philips product will save up to 80% energy that regular bulb. You will save 300 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. 2. Replace filters air conditioner You will save save 350 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. Dirty filter will make your air conditioner doing hard work. 3. Shutdown electromic stuff when you not use it. Shuthting TV, vomputer can save a lot of energy. 4. Walk rather than use car If you want to go somewhere near use your own foot. Car and motorcycle produce carbon dioxide. 5. Buy fresh foods instead of frozen Frozen food uses 10 times more energy to produce. To frozen food co

Global Warming Threats

Currently, Earth temperatures continue to rise, occurred Anomalies season and the weather extreme. Polar ice melt, and threatening Hurricane. Ozone hole yawn, the World is on real crisis. Natural disaster, anywhere, Mostly because we RADIO (Human). Progress of Science and Technology is not all good for us. One is global warming. Himalaya glacier as eternal snow bank, is one of the most suffering as a result of global warming. Fourteen Peak - One of Mount Everest - the Tibetan plateau that met all ice. Ice on Himalayas hundred times more than the Highlands Alpen (Europe). Seven of the River of Asia that there disgorge (River Yellow River, Yangtze River, Mekong River, Salween River, Brahmaputera, Gangga River, and the Indus River) produce for more than half a source of water Drinks for 40% of the population of Earth. If Glester it disappeared, Say 25 years in the future, then the 2.6 billion people will lose the source of drinking water. What will we leave Heritage misery for our c

The Green Houe Effect

Image
Our planet warm is because green house gases that naturally exist on atmosphere heating it by trapping energy from the sun. This is what web call greenhouse effect. If this greenhouse gases not exist our planet surface will as cold as Moon (-18 degrees celsius). Our planet surface now have temperature about 15 degrees celsius. Measurements taken from all over the world, however, have shown that the global climate is changing. In the last 100 years the atmosphere has warmed up by about half a degree Celsius. Also during this time humans have been emitting extra greenhouse gases, which are the result of burning fossil fuels (like coal, oil and gas). These gases include carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. It’s true that we made emissions of greenhouse gases by using fossil fuels. The extra greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trap more energy and therefore enhance the greenhouse effect. This may cause more warming. Greenhouse gases are also released by the exhausts of motor vehicle

LCD Increases Global Warming

Perhaps many people do not know much about the impact of pollution from LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) television. From the results of the research scientist Michael Prather, from New Scientist, a service that focuses on science and technology news, that chemicals used to make LCD televisions and semi-conductor global warming could cause more fuel than coal. Trifluorida nitrogen ( NF3 ) is a “ greenhouse gas that is not visible,” based on research from the journal entitled “ Geophysical Research Letters ” on 26 last June. Nitrogen Trifluorida used in making chemical smoke, which can create a layer lquid Crystal, semi-conductor and synthetic diamonds. Prather estimates that the results of chemical production will be increased to 8,000 metric tons in 2009. Meanwhile, global warming from Nitrogen Trifluorida will result in 17,000 times stronger than the effect karbondiaosida (CO2). Not only NF3 and the carbon dioxide that can improve the quality of global warming. According to the Kyoto

IT Contributes in Global Warming

Global warming has forced the industry to think hard to organize the handling, without exception Technology. This is because the impact on the damage that appear for sustaining ecosystem and human life widely. According to the Intergovermental Panel and Climate Change (IPCC) research, an international institution of more than 100 countries that initiated the United Nations, in the year 2005 has been an increase in world temperatures around 0.6 to 0.7 degrees, while in Asia a higher, namely 10 degrees. This Glaser (Ice Mountain) melt in the Himalayas and the South Pole and the decreasing availability of water in the tropical regions as much as 20% to 30%. Melting of Glaser in the Himalayas and the South Pole itself a direct impact on improving the surface sea water as high as 4-6 meters. If this continues then left in the year 2012 the sea water will rise again about 7 meters. With the automatic life in the ecosystem and coastal and island areas will be endangered. Meanwhile, changes in

Hi Test Post

Hi this is a test post.

How can I start cleaning my earth?

I am glad that you are reading this article, and hence I believe that either you have decided to clean our earth or thinking about cleaning our earth. It might be confusing to you in the beginning , on how to start and where to start. Well do not worry, we at earthivist will help you with it. To begin with, do not hit the street and start spreading the message, on keeping our city clean and green or any such things. First we need to check what we as an individual are doing to keep our earth clean? Is our house clean and green? Is our backyard clean? Do we have a tree or a plant in our house? Is our house and its surroundings clean? If the answer for any of the above questions is “no”, then you must read on. The first step is to leave behind the thought, “What government is doing for us?” This thought is the basis of all evil. So we must kill this thought. The next step is to setup a good garbage disposal system right in our own homes. For instance, keep a minimum of two or three separa

What is Earthivist is all about?

This is my first post on this blog, hence I should make things clear on what earthivist is all about. Earthivist is all about bringing the issues that our planet faces in our cruel hands. Why should i use such harsh words, in my very first post. The reason being the condition of our planet earth. The condition is some what better in the developed countries, but in developing countries it is hopeless. Earth is experiencing severe torture everyday. Reason the desire to become developed and acquire wealth no matter what happens, lower level of education, no knowledge about the environment, no knowledge about noise pollution, air pollution, water pollution etc,. Rich, poor, middle class all coming together and polluting the environment as if it is their single most goal in life. Well this blog is not a source to play the blame game, but it is a source, to make people understand, what we are doing and make them realize that if this goes on we will be turning our planet into a polluted one,

Beautiful Website, Invisible on Search Engines -- Why?

My friend has served as pastor a church in the Tacoma area for the last decade. I thought that using Google to search for the name of his church and the city I could easily find the church website. Wrong. It's a very large church in a city of 85,000, but it's practically invisible on the search engines. As I began to study the website, I could see why. It is built on a sophisticated content management system provided at a reasonable price by a company that specializes in producing beautiful, template-driven websites for churches. The problem is that the navigation system is very unfriendly to search engine spiders -- in multiple ways. Let me detail the problems: The homepage has a "splash page" made up of a single GIF image and no text content that is spider food for search engine spiders. No content, no interest from search engines and no keywords to index. If the splash page used Flash, it might load faster, but be just as impenetrable to search engines. The n

A new step

On 7th December, I have completed all my initial stage work on starting a computer education firm. This firm will aim in providing quality computer education to all the age groups, however our target group will be school and college students. The firm is named as techyPunch . TechyPunch will also provide a number of other services but computer education being our primary target. I as the founder of the company aim in bringing the quality in computer education in India, which is still missing in India. Indians in the field of computers have to go a long way and we at techyPunch aim to make it a bit simple. We will be waiting for new students to know about us and join us. Krish.

Ram & Vishal's Farewell

Image
It was 3rd- Dec-2008. This week was Ram and Vishal's last week in satyam and they chose this day to give us a party. After some thought we went to Basera restaurant on ECR road. We reached there made ourselves comfortable on our table and started browsing through the menu. We then started our order and soon our table was filled with different varieties of starters. The food seemed a lot, but got vanished very soon. We then took the menu again and ordered the main course. The food was real good and we enjoyed a lot. We had naans, biryani, fried rice, noodles. Chicken barbecue, fish tikka, chicken gravy, prawn fry. After a heavy meal it was time to have some desert. We then ordered milk shakes and took it in slowly while enjoying every drop of it. At last it was time for Ram and Vishal to pay the bill. They took out their cards and payed the bill and after a few snaps we drove back to our office. It was indeed a great experience. Krish
